🦝 Critters in the Attic

 In Homeowner Tips

October (aka spooky season) feels like the right time to remind you about raccoons, squirrels and rats. Every city has critters, and these are our big 3 in Central Texas. These little pests are very enterprising and find many ways into our homes, seeking water and shelter.

You’ll know something’s amiss if you find acorns stashed in random places of your home, like one of my clients did. Or if you’re hearing sounds in the walls. If you’re gone for an extended period of time, have a friend check on your home. Raccoons turned one client’s empty house into their own Taj Mahal!

Nip their activities in the bud with these three tips:

  • Walk the perimeter and look up at your eaves. Seal chew spots or small holes.
  • Check your attic for droppings or disturbed insulation.
  • Listen for nighttime footsteps in walls or ceilings—critters are most active after dark.

If you catch signs early, repairs are easier and less expensive.
